I imagine my feelings might have been different if the N64 was my only console (or, uh, if I didn't buy so many games). The wait for that, and then again between Wave Race in September and Mario Kart in December, was excruciating!

I do remember fondly the drought at the beginning though the N64 came out in June in Japan with three games, and the next game - Wave Race - wasn't until September. I bought the system near JP launch, so going by OP's criteria of the first year in the US means the following list covers more like 15 months than a year, but.īetween this and already having a PlayStation, I was pretty OK with the number of N64 games, and Mario Kart 64 arriving relatively early meant the system was always in-demand for multiplayer in a way the PlayStation wasn't (something which only increased when GoldenEye arrived). So what about all of you? For those that had a N64 in it's first year, what did you think of the initial games? Was it enough for you or did you want more? Unfortunately, post Goldeneye, N64 would have a very tepid Fall release lineup(standouts were: Diddy Kong Racing, WCW/NWO World Tour and Mischief Makers which I sadly overlooked).

Those games alone gave me countless hours and kept me satisfied for a good while. Sadly I was unable to get Star Fox 64 and Goldeneye when they launched.

Personally I had: Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey and Turok Dinosaur Hunter. If you're only going to have 22 games released in a year, I think that's a pretty nice varied list, with some classics already in it's first year(save for the lack of RPGs). Since I'm in the US, I'll be listing out the 22 games released for Nintendo 64 in its first 365 days on the market (Japan had only 19 according to wiki and since Europe had a later release, they had over 40 games in its first year).įor comparison, Playstation 1 had about 47 games released in the US in less than its first four months on the market.
